The Venus flytrap is a carnivorous plant native to subtropical wetlands in parts of North America. It catches prey, mainly small insects, with a trapping device formed by the edge of each of the plant's leaves, this is triggered by tiny trigger hairs on their inner surfaces. When an insect crawls along the leaves and touches a hair, the trap prepares to close, it snaps shut only if another contact occurs within a few seconds of the first strike. The plant will only begin digestion after five more stimuli to ensure it has caught a live insect worth consuming.
