North Bay Flamborough Head Fishing was first recorded in the 13th century when about nine boats fished the seas off the Head. By the 1890s some eighty 'cobles' were registered. George Washington Wilson (7 February 1823 – 9 March 1893) [1] was a pioneering Scottish photographer. From about 1870 onwards Wilson relied increasingly on others to add to his stock.[6] Thus all of the Mediterranean views and many of the English and Scottish series are the work of staff photographers or were commissioned by the company from photographic firms elsewhere in the UK; and the Australian and South African images were added to the firm's stock in the 1890s by Charles Wilson (GWW's son) and staff photographers such as Fred Hardie.[7]

Slide 56 St Charle’s church Monte Carlo. In 1879 the Monegasque prince Charles III commissioned the construction of a new church to accommodate the growing population of Monte-Carlo. One of the builders was Italian-born Jean-Baptiste Pastor. The church's dedication to Charles Borromeo highlighted the Borromeo family's historic ties to the Grimaldi family the ruling family of Monaco. Bishop Charles Theuret of Monaco laid Saint-Charles's corner stone on November 11 1879; it was completed and opened on Easter Monday March 26 1883 and subsequently declared a parish church on March 15 1887.

The early history of Monaco is primarily concerned with the protective and strategic value of the Rock of Monaco the area's chief geological landmark which served first as a shelter for ancient peoples and later as a fortress. Part of Liguria's history since the fall of the Roman Empire from the 14th to the early 15th century the area was contested for primarily political reasons. Since that point excepting a brief period of French occupation it has remained steadily under the control of the House of Grimaldi.[1]

The 26 January every year the Principality of Monaco celebrates their patron St. Devote where they burn a boat on the harbour not far from the valley of Gaumates and the district of La Condamine. The next day January 27 (day of the feast of Saint Devote) hosts an impressive procession.
